British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, identified by intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of access tunnels providing entry to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of British forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their valour," Healey added. "They were among thousands of British personnel stationed over the holidays. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
