The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.
Replay systems will be launched at The Championships this year.
Players are granted the ability to challenge particular rulings from the official, echoing the practice currently in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This step arrives only a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to review other situations, such as:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.
A Recent Example
A recent example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.
Further Updates
A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.
In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
